PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Gul Ahmed is a leading textile brand dealing in Home textile, Women and Men Fabric and Apparel. It thrives to cater to a wide spread clientele from the lower middle class to higher class. Their stores are mostly demarcated into three departments including; Women, Home and Men, in order of importance.

Naheed Mashooqullah studio for Interior Design & Architecture is a pioneering studio for interiors in Karachi, Pakistan. NM Studio has been designing Gul Ahmed outlets and franchises in leading cities of Pakistan since the past 12 years. I joined NM Studio as the Project Architect for Gul Ahmed in March 2012 and have since grown to the designation of Project Head for the same project. I currently lead a team of one architect and two draftsmen under me to design the on-going Gul Ahmed Stores. I look into the project through its inception to execution and the final hand over of the shop. This project has taught me a great deal in terms of design, project management, project execution, client handling, handling various members of the construction team from civil contractors, MEP and HVAC consultants and contractors as well as vendors.

Gul Ahmed Ocean Mall is the flagship store for Gul Ahmed in Karachi. It is their largest area on one floor; i.e. 8000 sq.ft. This outlet was designed in a way whereby all the three departments can be seen clearly through and through as you walk past the shop. The column layout in the mall architecture was also very instrumental in laying out the design. One of the major obstacles in doing the interiors of this shop were the 4’-0” – 6’-0” diameter columns. These are very smartly camouflaged by the use of mirrors and niches as well as back lit posters in the column cladding. These elements add to the aesthetics of the shop and gives the shop an interesting illusion of space. These mirrors also help in creating a visual connection from one department to the other.
